AUS Championships Pole Climbing
Woodfest is one of the few show grounds in the UK that hosts pole climbing competitions and displays. Towering over the festival field are our two huge 80ft Douglas fir poles weighing over 6tons each. The climbing were selected from Longleat forest and transported up to our festival site in North Wales. Each year the poles are erected using a crane supplied by Bob Francis Crane Hire and we replace with new climbing poles every four years.
This thrilling event tests who can climb a free-standing wooden pole in the fastest time with the appropriate climbing aids. Using spiked boots, strops and safety harnesses the top athletes can often scale the pole in around 10/11 seconds. The competitors will range from experts down to novice classes, competitors come from all over the UK and Europe, the competition is open to both men and women. Each year we have a very special guest Mr. George Tipping he is 79 years young who climbs for the charity Marie Curie cancer care. He has raised over £33,000 pounds over a period of 10 years and continues to climb at an astounding pace for this worthy cause. The pole climbing arena is organised and run by Terry Bennett- a previous world champion climber, along with his partner Lisa who oversees the smooth running of the competition.
